The Stopping Overshopping Individual Program
I provide shopping addiction treatment through individual face to face sessions in Sydney (Lower North Shore) or via Skype Australia wide. Our work together starts with an assessment where you will fill out a personal history questionnaire and two valid and reliable compulsive buying rating scales. This process will increase your awareness about your shopping behaviour and help me understand how to best support you.
Note: In the case where mental health issues and/or serious financial concerns are present, I encourage you to seek or maintain support with other qualified professionals for issues that will not be addressed directly through this program.
I will take you through Dr Benson’s book, To Buy or Not to Buy: Why We Overshop and How to Stopwhich has a companion journal to help you complete weekly exercises. The program can be tailored to meet individual needs which would involve a minimum of four sessions, but to complete the program as set out in the book, it will take approximately 10 – 12 x 50 minute sessions. The program aims to help you change your problematic buying behaviour and will cover the following topics:
√ Understand why you overshop
√ Triggers & their consequences
√ Explore ambivalence about changing
√ Track your spending and evaluate the necessity of each expenditure
√ Understand the pull of shopping magnets:e.g ( internet shopping, social pressure, salespeople, keeping up with “The Joneses”)
√ Anticipate lapses, avoid relapses and identify and plan for high risk situations.
√ Develop the capacity to shop mindfully
* Your progress will be supported by developing specific, achievable and measurable weekly goals.
The Stopping Overshopping - Group Program
The in-person group program is a 12-week experience which will follow the chapters outlined in Dr Benson’s book, To Buy or Not to Buy: Why We Overshop And How To Stop. With the group dynamic you will get the additional benefit of peer support, encouragement and feedback under the facilitation of a trained professional.
The presence of others with similar issues around their shopping behaviour reduces feelings of isolation. Members can also choose to swap contact details and be a support for eachother during and after the program. The Group Program will have educational and experiential elements and will includeweekly reflection and goal setting.
